Gary Sims and I had been friends since the early days at McKinley Grade School, spending weekends and summer vacations playing softball on the school’s baseball field.  When picking sides, we always made sure we were on the same side and played opposite against Don Foster and Gary Hone.  Gary Sims was not that tall but built like an Army tank and played catcher.  It was generally not safe for anyone to come sliding into home and for those that did, they were left in a heap inches short of home plate.  Gary's constant companion, Chuck Holden never played but was a frequent visitor to our games, and often chauffeured Gary Sims home in celebration as our side often turned out the winner.  Chuch drove a brand new, 1961 Ford Convertible. The last time I visited Spokane summer of 1990, Gary was the only one I was able to make contact with while up there.  It was though Gary had never changed, he looked the same as he did before I moved to Los Angeles in 1968.  Gary always had a smile on face and one could tell he enjoyed life to the fullest.  Thanks to Barry Harris, it was but a few years ago that I discovered that Gary had passed away and he sent me via email a photo of the cemetery.  I miss him and will not forget Gary's wonderful smile.  Jim

I also remember Gart, the thing that I remember most about him happened at Libby.  It was in the spring and we were do track in P.E.  We were doing the hurdles.  As Gary approached the first hurdle, he got out of step and stopped at the hurdle.  He then walked around the hurdle and then continued running.  Gene Lister went ballistic.  I think that Gary had to do a few extra laps.

Gary wasn't the only one to make Eugene Lister blow his top.  Way to go Gary!
